Implicit Bias in Healthcare

Implicit bias in healthcare has gained increasing attention due to its potential role in contributing to health disparities. Research suggests that unconscious biases held by healthcare professionals can influence their perceptions, communication, diagnostic decisions, and overall quality of care. These biases may lead to inconsistent help-seeking behaviors among patients, misdiagnoses, and unequal treatment approaches. Moreover, biased attitudes and interactions—often unintentional—can undermine patient trust and comfort, which may result in shorter visits, reduced treatment adherence, and poor follow-up care. Individuals from marginalized or disadvantaged populations are particularly susceptible, as implicit bias may further intensify the inequities they already face within the healthcare system.
