Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Identify the anatomical structures of the eye and eyelid and understand their physiological functions in maintaining visual health.
- Recognize common eyelid disorders including blepharitis, chalazion, hordeolum, and ptosis, and understand their clinical presentation and treatment approaches.
- Assess and classify corneal injuries including abrasions, ulcers, and keratitis, and determine appropriate management strategies.
- Evaluate ocular trauma including blunt force injuries, lacerations, and orbital fractures, and understand the principles of emergency stabilization.
- Understand the pathophysiology of glaucoma, recognize acute angle-closure glaucoma as an ophthalmic emergency, and differentiate between open-angle and closed-angle presentations.
- Identify signs and symptoms of retinal disorders including detachment, tears, and vascular occlusions, and recognize when immediate specialist referral is required.
- Manage chemical and thermal burns of the eye including immediate irrigation protocols and ongoing treatment considerations.
- Assess and manage foreign body injuries and penetrating trauma to the eye, including recognition of intraocular foreign bodies and globe rupture.
